Lee Construction has a long history of service. The company has its roots in the history of the Lee family. Gordon Lee moved his family to Garden City in 1948 to begin work in the construction industry. He and his brothers had done some contracting work in Coffeeville after they had all returned from military service in World War II. It appeared to Gordon that the Garden City area offered more opportunity for a young man than did the Southeastern Kansas area. After moving to Garden City he began his business by constructing houses.

He built many fine homes in the Garden City area in the 1950's. From 1950 to 1962 he and Joe Woolman operated as Lee and Woolman Construction Company. They dissolved the partnership in the early sixties and then Gordon operated as Lee Construction Company. Although the business had its start building houses, by the late fifties and early sixties it was also successfully bidding on and building commercial and school projects.

Gordon was joined in the construction business by his sons as they returned from their military service, Gail in 1966 and Richard in 1970. In 1976 Lee Construction Company incorporated and became Lee Construction, Inc. This family owned firm expanded into a general contractor that provided a wide range of construction services. The firm is somewhat unusual in the wide variety of types of projects that it completes each year.

Gordon retired from the management team about ten years ago, but he still checks on the activities of the firm when he is in town.

As time has passed, Lee Construction has kept pace with the services it can offer. It can provide the business community of Southwest Kansas with a very diverse range of construction capability. The firm is able to compete in this wide range of services due to the quality and experience of their long-term employees and to their superior equipment fleet.

Lee Construction Inc. has always recognized that a firm should participate both in their community and the advancement and betterment of their industry.

We strive to be good corporate citizens of this area and try to participate with the other members of the business community to provide for a better standard of living for the entire community. We are privileged to have been able to share our assets with the community.

Our firm has long recognized the importance of being involved in the advancement and betterment of the construction industry. We belong to both Associated General Contractors chapters in Kansas. Gail was the president of the AGC of Kansas in 1988 and the firm has participated in construction industry related issues for over twenty-five years.
